FAQ
What membership status types are there? Which one is right for me?
There are 4 types of members: Full, Affiliate, Student and Behavior Technician. You should decide which status you fall under by reading the criteria for each status type below. You should then indicate your membership status on your application form.
What criteria determine a “Full Member”?
To be a full member, you need to be a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA/BCBA-D) or Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA), or possess a minimum of a Master’s degree in psychology, behavior analysis, education, or a related discipline. Full members have professional commitments that include teaching, research, or practice in behavior analysis. Full members are eligible to vote in general elections and may run for and hold officer positions in NJABA. Anyone not meeting the qualifications may petition for Full Member status by submitting all pertinent information concerning education, training, and experience to the NJABA Membership Committee.
What criteria determine an “Affiliate Member”?
Affiliate members include anyone interested in the discipline of behavior analysis, but who do not meet the requirements for Full Membership. Affiliate members enjoy all benefits of full membership except for the right to vote in general elections and the right to be an officer in NJABA. An affiliate member appointed to the Board as a consumer representative will be granted the right to vote on any matter that comes before the Board. All individuals interested in the science and practical application of ABA services are welcome to join as Affiliate Members.
What criteria determine a “Student Member”?
Any individual who is currently enrolled on a full-time basis in a graduate or undergraduate program and who has taken at least one course in Applied Behavior Analysis. A person applying for student membership must provide a copy of a transcript indicating their status in the graduate or undergraduate program. With the exception of the Board position for Student Representative, student members may neither vote nor hold office in NJABA.
What criteria determine a “Behavior Technician Member”?
Any individual employed as a Behavior Technician with job duties that are primarily behavior analytic in nature. Behavior Technician members enjoy all benefits of full membership except for the right to vote in general elections.
Do therapists need to be certified as RBT to perform therapy?
Each carrier may have specified the credentials of various provider types that may implement behavior-analytic services. Most carriers require a program to be overseen by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA-D/BCBA) or a Qualified Health Care Professional (QHCP); while the QHCP does not necessarily specify certification that a BCBA possesses, most carriers will specify the BCBA-D/BCBA certification to fulfill that role. It is recommended that providers discuss specific requirements with each individual carrier under which they may be providing services. Similarly, carriers may have different requirements for individuals who are performing direct therapy under the supervision of the BCBA. Common titles for these individuals may be a therapist, tutor, paraprofessional, or Registered Behavior Technician(RBT). How long does my membership last?
Memberships run for a 1-year period, from January 1st through December 31st. With recurring membership plans, your membership will be automatically renewed and your credit card on file will be charged accordingly.
